7 cafés to try before leaving Melbourne

Melbourne’s cafes are famous around the world for their friendly service, tasty locally roasted coffee and delicious diverse menus. What I also love about these places is that the venue is often tastefully original and adds on to the unique experience when you eat there.
I selected 7 of my favourites cafes that you should try if you’re in Melbourne!

Wide Open Road, Brunswick
My favourite cafe to have a skinny cappuccino to take away or lunch in the outdoor area. Their sandwiches are amazing and they roast coffee from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Kenya. There’s a unique atmosphere in this place, probably related to the cool building and the hipster staff!

Rustica, Fitzroy
Awesome venue to buy some bread: choose from a dozen different ones, from seedy wholewheat to olive, not forgetting the traditional baguette! Highlights are the Apple Crumble Porridge and the Baba Ganoush. A fun and full of flavour menu!

The Green Refectory, Brunswick
Cheap and delicious food! I discovered this cafe randomly and have been regular ever since. The staff is lovely and they always have a ton of fresh, yummy sandwiches, quiches and cakes. This is one of the cheapest cafes in Brunswick, so really popular! It’s often busy but definitely worth the wait.

Old Man Drew, Ascot Vale
This cafe who is also a fine food merchant has a unique style; inside, it is like a labyrinth. Wander around and discover the very different dining rooms ( a vintage garden, a tea room, a wine cellar…). The elegant venue is also available for privates functions, perfect if you’re looking for an unusual place. When it comes to their menu, you can never be disappointed: from sweet treats to modern dishes, they have something for everyone!

East Elevation, Brunswick East
You’re probably thinking there are a lot of cafes from Brunswick in this list and that’s because I used to live there so I know a lot of good cafes in this area! This one is hidden behind a red door, well known by locals! I love the wooden and leafy look of this place, it’s a little getaway in the bursting Lygon Street. Definitely try their award-winning hot chocolate or Croque monsieur! As a French, I can tell you, it is good!

Naughty Boy Cafe, Princes Hill
Amazing brunch spot with tasty and pretty food. Know for their “Instashakes” (have a look on their Instagram) which are honestly fantastic and perfect for your feed! Their chai latte is one of the best I’ve had in Melbourne. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area!

Hardware Societe, Melbourne CBD
Last but not least, this place reminds me of a Parisian cafe (maybe that’s why I like it!). You can have a glass of red wine next to their Instagrammable butterfly wall at any time of the day. This café, who actually has a counterpart in Paris, has a delicious brunch menu: The Heart of Burrata will convince you of that! If you feel like staying after brunch, they are now open for Friday drinks and snacks, starting from 5 pm until late! See you there!

There are so many cafes worth being in this list but I had to choose my 7 favourites. If you’re visiting Melbourne, make sure to brunch at one (or more) of these places. You won’t regret it! If you live in Melbourne, which of these places do you know? Can you recommend some others? I love discovering new cafes! Let’s connect 🙂
