I can’t have a blog on French lifestyle without talking about classical Parisian style clothing! Paris is the fashion capital of the world thanks to its iconic designers and the Fashion week that is followed from around the world.
You have probably always wondered how to have the Parisian style and what are the basic pieces to buy first? I’ll answer in this article! I was born in Paris and I lived there for 23 years so I can definitely tell you how to easily copy the Parisian chic style!
Little black dress
The little black dress is a must-have of Parisian style clothing. What is practical with this dress is that it can be adapted according to the occasion! If you are going to a chic dinner, it’s perfect with high heels and a trench coat. If you want a more casual look, you can put it on with a denim jacket and a pair of Converse!
My pick: This gorgeous (and cheap!) dress.
Straight leg jean
Straight leg jeans are my favourite! Especially high-rise, I love it! It instantly gives a look that is both chic and casual. Match it with a t-shirt or shirt tucked into pants and low boots. You can also make it look even more Parisian with a blazer, lace top and high heels.
My pick: This bleach wash jean.
Classic Trench coat
The trench, my favourite coat. You can have one for each season, and different colours. I love the light beige trench coat for autumn and spring, paired with blue light jeans and ballet flats. For winter, I have a grey Zara trench coat that I love! For a typical Parisian style, wear it with a winter dress, black tights and high boots. Parisian chic look guaranteed!
My pick: This beautiful boyfriend trench coat.
The black blazer is one of the most iconic pieces of Parisian style clothing. Like the little black dress, it is versatile and provides perfect looks effortlessly. At work or at a fancy restaurant, I pair it with black pants and high heels. For a more casual look, I like to wear jeans, a simple t-shirt and comfortable sneakers (like Stan Smith) with the blazer.
My pick: This Stradivarius blazer.
I love oversized sweater because it goes with so many different looks! For a Parisian style, opt for a long skirt and mid-high boots. You can also have wide legs pants that hide your shoes. My favourite look is wearing a dress that is a little longer with an oversized sweater over the top. Add a small shoulder bag, tights and high boots!
My pick: This gorgeous pink oversized sweater.
The white t-shirt is an essential of all wardrobes in my opinion, not just Parisian style ones! The neutral colour allows it to match any style, and it gives a slender look when it is tucked into the pants. Perfect with flowing pants or a high skirt, it will become your favourite piece when you don’t know what to wear.
My pick: This cute organic cotton top.
What to say about the leather jacket that has not already been said… It is one of the essential fashion pieces and instantly gives style to any look. Whether you opt for a casual, evening or feminine look, the leather jacket does the trick! For a Parisian look, go for an all-black outfit or a mini skirt with a t-shirt tucked into it and flat shoes.
My pick: This traditional smooth leather jacket.
Knee-high boots are my favourite shoes because they give a classy and flawless look. I love to wear them with an oversized sweater and a mini skirt. You can also wear them with a trench, a midi dress and a beautiful scarf! I buy a lot of shoes from Andre, an affordable French brand with shoe models for all tastes.
My pick: These premium suede knee-high boots.
The maxi dress is perfect for Parisian summer and spring days. Comfortable and fluid, the dress adapts to each look and accessory: high or low boots, with or without a jacket… I love the versatility of this garment. For a Parisian style clothing look, choose a flowery print, lace, or both!
My pick: This & Other Stories floral print maxi dress.
What do you think of this essential list of Parisian style clothing? Do you own some of the clothes mentioned and transform them into Parisian outfits?
I know that for me living in Australia, it is difficult to find the same clothes that I used to wear in France. I left most of my “Parisian” clothes in Paris, and anyway, the Australians do not dress the same at all so I adapted a little! It’s more flip flops and summer dresses here hahaha.
But I love the Parisian style that I wore for so long. Each time I come back to France, I rediscover the joy of creating looks that are both classy and personal.
